Case Study: Assortment of Hulcher Equipment Moves 170 Tons With Precision

Scope

An aggregate company was ending its lease of a sand pit and needed to relocate its large industrial dredge to another pit approximately one mile away. They needed a company with the hardware capable of safely moving this 340,000 lb., 90’ x 20’ piece of equipment over land.

Solution

Hulcher Services was selected to move the industrial dredge based on its extensive experience with moving large pieces of equipment such as locomotives and rail cars. Hulcher deployed six Caterpillar® sidebooms, an excavator and two Caterpillar® 977 track loaders to complete the work. The excavators and track loaders started the project by digging a trench at the edge of the sand pit. Sidebooms brought in a platform to put beneath the dredge and placed that in the trench. Using the custom rear-mounted winches that Hulcher installs on their heavy equipment, the sidebooms and track loaders then pulled the dredge from the pit and into the trench, positioning it onto the platform.

Once the dredge was secured to the platform, the sidebooms lifted the entire load and transported it to the new location. The six sidebooms ultimately hauled the industrial dredge more than a mile and positioned it for servicing and placement into the new pit.

Outcome

The entire process of creating the trench, loading the dredge and moving it to its new location was completed in one day, as planned. With its extensive fleet of heavy equipment Hulcher was able to mobilize all the equipment needed to move this 170-ton piece of equipment safely. The company was pleased with how this challenging project was performed and is now scheduling with Hulcher to do more dredge moves in this manner.
