Grain comprises a significant portion of the railroads' business every year; in 2011 the Class I railroads transported 263.841 million metric tons of farm, food and kindred product, or 14% of their total tonnage for the year (1).
A major portion of the grain industry's daily operations includes interface with and transportation of product via the railroads. Further, grain facilities maintain their own rail cars and tracks on properties all around the United States. Grain facilities also maintain their own silos, grain bins and other storage buildings.
Successful grain businesses have recognized that it is more effective from a cost and performance basis to network with qualified railroad contractors like Hulcher Services for the maintenance of their railroad and facility properties.

Record snowfalls and spring rains resulted in major flooding throughout North Dakota. Much of the state was declared a disaster area. At the same time, a separate flood event devastated several midwest states. Railroads, local governments and industry needed a contractor with extensive, national resources, including trained crews and a fleet of heavy equipment, to respond to both flood events.
